Counselor: PRIMARY WORKSITE: Newark, NY JOB FUNCTION: The Counselor provides assessment relationship enhancement skills to assist individuals and their families in achieving their optimum level of functioning. The Counselor will utilize assessment skills, independent judgment, decision making, and creativity in assisting the individual’s/family’s personal growth and development while enhancing the stability of their social network. Must be able to provide mental status exams, crisis intervention, and have knowledge of community resources. HOURS: Full Time – 35 hrs/week SPECIFIC DUTIES: 1. Completes strength-based assessments and need analysis with individual/family. 2. Develops goal-oriented service plans in cooperation with the individual and/or family. 3. Coordinates identified services based upon needs of the individual’s/families’ service plan. 4. Participates in formal/informal training programs, which provide basic knowledge relative to the program’s purpose, services provided, population characteristics and evidenced-based practice methods utilized. Maintains data from individual/family services provided. 5. Provides MRES curriculum and workshops in schools, community centers/libraries and local businesses. 6. Other duties as outlined in Position Description. QUALIFICATIONS: • Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Social Work, Psychology or related Human Services field. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: • Ability to express thoughts concisely and logically. • Ability to plan and organize work, prepare records/reports, establish priorities and maintain a caseload in an effective and timely manner and communicate effectively and work cooperatively with other professionals, individuals/families receiving services. • Other requirements as outlined in Job Description. This position provides many opportunities to work flexible afternoon and evening hours providing care and supervision to individuals with developmental disabilities during agency sponsored recreation or group respite events, or in the individual's home in the absence of the primary care giver. Candidates must have a HS/GED, be able to provide physical assistance including lifting and experience working with developmentally disabled individuals is preferred.
