2018

A Vision of the Future!  On December 12, 2018 at 5:45 p.m. Cornell University’s Design Connect team will present a conceptual plan of Newark’s downtown area.  The students and the Village of Newark held a well-attended outreach event at which community members participated in research activities and exchanged thoughts on the development of downtown Newark.  Based on this information and visits to the area, the students created a comprehensive conceptual plan to complement and enhance current revitalization efforts.  The plan will provide recommendations such as location and addition of businesses, landscaping, recreational areas, pedestrian traffic, and seating. The presentation will be held in the courtroom on the second floor of the Municipal Building, 100 East Miller Street, Newark.  Come see a vision of the future!

The Village of Newark held a Budget Hearing on April 3, 2018 at which Mayor Jonathan Taylor and the Village Trustees announced that for the fifth time in six years, there will be no Village tax increase. In addition, for the seventh straight year, the water and sewer rates will remain the same.  Despite the flat tax rate, public safety and Village services will not be compromised.  In fact, it is important to note that almost 70% of the total budget is designated for this effort, with 41% percent of the total Village budget being allocated to the Police Department.  Other items of note from the meeting include that nearly half of the Department of Public Works (DPW) budget is earmarked for much needed street paving and snow removal, the Wastewater Treatment Project has been completed, and the Water Treatment Plant will be undergoing an expansion/renovation project.

The Village of Newark was awarded $2000 to support art in education in the Newark School District.  Working partnership with Mural Mania, students will refurbish an existing mural and create a new mural about the Erie Canal.  Click here for more information.

There are plans in the coming months to begin several projects around the Village. There will be a complete reconstruction of Route 88 South, from the canal bridge on the north to Rose Drive on the south. Also, there will be an LED lighting upgrade underway throughout the Village, and upgrades to the East Avenue Bridge. The final project will involve the replacement of the culvert under West Union Street near First Choice Electric Supply and the Canal View Family Restaurant.  In an effort to keep our residents updated on these projects the Newark Village Board is encouraging residents and business owners to sign up now for Nixle to receive email updates on information pertaining to road closures, detours and other related items.  Sign up!  For desktops, simply click the tab on the left reading “Sign Up for Community Alerts” and follow the instructions. For mobile devices, scroll down to “Quick Links” and click on “Receive Community Alerts”.  We understand that it may be difficult at times to travel through these areas, however we ask for your patience and to know that these upgrades to our infrastructure are necessary to ensure a continued high quality of life within our Village. Positive Change is on the Way!!  Exciting times are ahead!  In the spring, the Village of Newark will begin to upgrade South Main Street from the Main Street Bridge to Rose Drive.  In preparation for this work, Village crews will begin removing approximately 53 trees along South Main Street. This will occur between November 1, 2017 and March 31, 2018, as required by the DEC for protection of the long-eared bat.  Please excuse our growing pains and remember that this is a work in progress! Once the road reconstruction is done, new landscaping will follow, including approximately 54 new trees, as outlined in the design plan.  Mayor Taylor stated that, “By the Village removing the trees ourselves, we will save money and make it faster for the contractors to get this exciting, much awaited project underway in the spring.”  Click here for an update by Mayor Taylor.
